WHO DO YOU DESIGN FOR? DOES THE IDEAL ADAM LIPPES WOMAN EXIST?

THERE ARE DESIGNERS WHO WILL POINT TO A VERY SPECIFIC WOMAN AS THEIR IDEAL CUSTOMER. I DON'T FEEL THAT WAY. I FEEL THAT SHE REALLY TRANSCENDS THE SPECIFICITY OF A CORE CUSTOMER. SHE MAY BE 28 OR 82, SHE IS A GLOBAL CITIZEN; AFFLUENT, CULTURED, AND WELL TRAVELED. SHE IS CONSIDERED AND THOUGHTFUL IN HER CHOICES AND BUSY IN HER LIFE WITH FAMILY, WORK, AND PLAY. SHE DEFINITELY DOES NOT LOOK FOR LABELS, SHE LOOKS FOR QUALITY. AND I DO THINK THAT ONE THING IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HER-- THAT IS THAT HER CLOTHES DON’T WEAR HER, DON’T SPEAK FOR HER, INSTEAD, THEY SIMPLY COMMUNICATE EASE AND CONFIDENCE THROUGH THE CUT, FIT, COLOR, AND DETAILS.

IN THE PAST YOU HAVE SIGHTED COCO BRANDOLINI AS YOUR MUSE IS THAT STILL THE CASE?

WOMEN WITH COCO'S LIFESTYLE ARE MY MUSE.

YOU STUDIED PSYCHOLOGY AND WERE ON TRACK TO WORKING IN THE FINANCIAL SERVICES, WHAT WAS IT THAT PULLED YOU INTO THE FASHION WORLD?

I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER BUT COMING FROM A SMALL TOWN AND A FAMILY OF DOCTORS AND LAWYERS, I DIDN'T THINK THIS WAS IN THE CARDS. SO INSTEAD, I STUDIED PSYCHOLOGY AND HAD MY FIRST MAIN INTERNSHIP AT AN INVESTMENT BANK. BUT SPENDING A SEMESTER ABROAD IN PARIS EXPOSED ME TO THE FASHION WORLD-- A WORLD I NEVER KNEW EXISTED. THERE WAS NO TURNING BACK FROM MY DREAM AFTER THAT.

IF ADAM LIPPES THE STUDENT MET THE ADAM LIPPES OF TODAY WHAT WOULD HE THINK?

I'VE NEVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT THAT. I THINK PROBABLY HE'D BE PRETTY SURPRISED BUT ALSO HAPPY. I'M SO HAPPY WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW. HOW HAS THE FASHION INDUSTRY CHANGED SINCE YOU GOT YOUR START WITH RALPH LAUREN AND OSCAR DE LA RENTA? I THINK ON ONE HAND, THE FASHION INDUSTRY HAS GONE THROUGH AN UPHEAVAL SINCE I GOT MY START AT RALPH LAUREN AND WITH MR. DE LA RENTA. EVERYTHING IS SO FAST RIGHT NOW, YOU SEE RUNWAY COLLECTIONS IN FAST FASHION STORES ONE MONTH LATER. ONLINE HAS TOTALLY CHANGED RETAIL AND THE AMOUNT OF GOOD FASHION OUT THERE IS INCREDIBLE. THAT BEING SAID, A LOT OF HOW WE DO THINGS REMAINS EXACTLY THE SAME. I WONDER IF THIS WILL BE THE NEXT BIG SHIFT IN FASHION.

DO YOU THINK NOT FORMALLY STUDYING FASHION OPENED YOU UP TO DESIGNING IN A UNIQUE WAY?

I THINK THAT NOT FORMALLY STUDYING FASHION REALLY ALLOWED FOR TWO THINGS: FOREMOST, A WAY TO APPROACH DESIGN IN A WAY FREE OF THE EDUCATIONAL NORMS. INSTEAD, I HAD TO LEARN ABOUT DESIGN AS I WAS WORKING WHICH ALLOWED ME TO LEARN AT MY OWN PACE AND IN MY OWN WAY. SECONDLY, IN SCHOOL I STUDIED A LOT OF THE TRADITIONAL COURSES, INCLUDING BUSINESS AND FINANCE, WHICH HAS BEEN SO HELPFUL IN UNDERSTANDING A BUSINESS, AND PSYCHOLOGY, WHICH AS WE ALL KNOW IS PERFECT FOR DEALING WITH ALL OF THE PERSONALITIES IN OUR INDUSTRY.

YOU WERE ONE OF THE YOUNGEST HEAD DESIGNERS EVER, DO YOU THINK THIS HAS LEANT A YOUTHFULNESS TO THE WAY YOU DESIGN?

I DON'T TRY TO BE YOUTHFUL; I TRY TO DESIGN A COLLECTION THAT IS AGELESS. I DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT ACTUALLY, BUT BEING INSPIRED BY WOMEN OF ALL AGES MAKES IT NATURAL FOR ME.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR AUTUMN WINTER 15 COLLECTION IN 4 WORDS?
